Psychology of Conversion: A Critical Examination of Contemporary Models. (Lewis Rambo, Coordinator)
In this dissertation I assess the adequacy of Ullman’s empirical research on the cognitive and affective dimensions of religious conversion, Kirkpatrick’s attachment theory, and Paloutzian’s meaning-system analysis of the psychology of conversion from the critical perspective of theology and religious studies. I demonstrate that integrating insights drawn from geographical (Tweed) and attributional (Taves) theories of religion, theology (Gelpi), and Bulkeley’s integrative study of wonder with these contemporary psychological frameworks significantly contributes to an expanded and enriched multi-level interdisciplinary treatment of this phenomenon.
